Recognitions are always welcome, and even more so when they are collective. At the Ballon d'Or gala, FC Barcelona’s women’s football team was named the Best Women's Team of 2024. France Football awarded the players and the Barça staff with this distinction for the second consecutive year after they completed yet another historic season, culminating in the club’s first quadruple.
Barça president Joan Laporta, joined by Alexia, Aitana, Graham Hansen, Salma, Patri, Marta Torrejón, Pere Romeu and Xavier Puig, collected the prize, mentioning what a joy it is to win it in the club's 125th anniversary year. "I want to thank the players who work so hard for FC Barcelona to have the best women's team in the world" he said. "We are extremely committed to the women's game, and women's rights, freedoms and equalities."
Domestic treble...
The Spanish Super Cup was the first title to arrive. On January 20, the team lifted the trophy after defeating Levante 7-0. Five months later, the league title followed. After a phenomenal season with 29 wins and just one draw, Barça was crowned champions of the domestic championship for the fifth consecutive and ninth overall time, and they did so with four matches to spare.
The regular season ended with 137 goals scored, 21 of which came from the league's top scorer, Caroline Graham Hansen. The Norwegian was also the top assister, with 19.
They also reached Copa del Rey final two weeks after clinching the league title and just one week before playing their sixth Champions League final. With all eyes on them, they went on to win 8-0 against Real Sociedad, securing the treble. But the hardest part still lay ahead: winning the Champions League against Olympique Lyon.
... and European champions
In a dream final, Barça won their third continental trophy. Beyond the trophy, the real reward was celebrating with an endless sea of Barça fans who travelled to Bilbao.
Barça defeated their long-time nemesis 2-0 in a perfect final, with Aitana opening the scoring and Alexia sealing the victory. After an outstanding performance, Aitana was named the MVP of the final—a recognition that, along with her 6 goals and 6 assists, also earned her the title of 2023/24 Champions League MVP.
The Champions League was the crowning achievement to consolidate Barça’s domestic and European dominance in recent years. This trophy was the cherry on top of an already stellar season, rounding off the club’s first-ever quadruple. The dream had been within reach since 2019, with Barça falling just one title short in the four previous seasons.
